Fall Out and Play Near The Dunes
When sweater weather hits, fewer crowds, cider stops, and a full lineup of fall activities and events make this season well worth the trip.

Sure, summer gets all the glory, but fall in Saugatuck/Douglas is seriously underrated. We’re talking more space, fewer crowds, and color-drenched scenery that begs for an Instagram reel. And the best part? The Dunes can still be your home base where you can party, crash, and wake up ready to do it all again.
Here’s your Dunes-approved guide for what to do in Saugatuck/Douglas when the temps start to cool and it’s time to trade in your Speedo for a cozy sweater.
Color Us Obsessed
Fall color tours hit different here. Sure, you could just drive around to take it all in, but the hiking trails at Saugatuck Dunes State Park promise just enough of a workout to justify another apple cider donut or slice of pie from Crane’s Pie Pantry Restaurant. For a special twist on leaf peeping, try a horseback ride through the woods with Rise and Ride Ranch or Wild West Ranch, or hop aboard the Star of Saugatuck to see the foliage along the shoreline.
Add in some apple picking and exploring a corn maze at Cranes Orchards along with some wine tasting at Michigan Wine Co., Fenn Valley Vineyards & Winery, and Modales Wines, and suddenly your fall weekend isn’t just cute, it’s kind of legendary.

Cider Celebrations & Fall Festivities
Fall here involves more than just sipping cider, though we are completely down with that! Kick off the season at Crane’s Annual Cider Fest Celebration (Sept. 6), where ciders, wines, and fresh eats pair perfectly with live music and a pie-eating contest—because why not? Later, Virtue Cider keeps the momentum going with their Apple Fest (Sept. 27–28), a two-day bash filled with farmhouse cider (of course), live music, games, bonfires, production tours, and a pig roast.
Douglas brings the fun with Oktoberfest (Oct. 11), when Beery Field transforms into a Bavarian blowout packed with food, live music, crafts, and games. Between the beer garden, a cash cube stuffed with prizes, wiener dog races, and even a car show, there’s more than enough happening to keep you entertained until dusk.
Artsy & A Little Extra
When your cider buzz fades and you’re ready for a dash of culture, Saugatuck/Douglas has you covered. This area is known as the Art Coast of Michigan, after all. Kick things off with Art in the Park (Sept. 13), where Wicks Park will be filled with artwork, fine crafts, and live Americana-style music. Then swing by Art in Douglas that same afternoon for a mini gallery hop.
A few weeks later, the Blue Coast Artists Studio Tour (Oct. 4–5) gives you a backstage pass to see creativity come to life. Watch potters spin magic at the wheel, painters bring landscapes to life, and woodturners transform raw logs into pieces that will make your jaw drop.
And then there’s the crown jewel of art events: the 49th Annual Fall Gallery Stroll (Oct. 11–12), where wandering through galleries and artist studios becomes the ultimate vacation adventure you never knew you needed, until now. Meet the artists, watch live demos, sip and snack along the way, and marvel at artwork in every medium imaginable—from hand-blown glass to contemporary sculpture. Who knows? A few galleries in, a few drinks later, and boom—you’re officially an art collector in the making.
Halloween but Make It Fabulous
And, finally, this town doesn’t just dabble in spooky season—it owns it. The annual Douglas Halloween Parade for Adults (Oct. 25) is the stuff of legends, known for creative costumes that push every boundary. At 10 pm, watch the Pumpkin King rise from the ashes to kick off the party. Thousands come for this event—it’s campy, creepy, and completely over-the-top in all the best ways. Afterwards, come back to The Dunes for our Nightmare on Blue Star festivities. This is one fall weekend you won’t want to miss!
