Best Place To Catch Some Rays (Beyond the Dunes Pool)
Six Lake Michigan beaches serve up everything from laid-back lounging to full-on main character moments.

We get it. The pool scene at The Dunes is the—chef’s kiss—place to show up, show out, and mix and mingle with a cocktail in hand. But just beyond our fabulous resort lies 12 miles of beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline, where six totally unique beaches serve up sun, fun, and vibes as diverse as our community. Want to kick back and chill? Want space to roam? There’s a beach for that.
Here’s the lowdown on where else in Saugatuck/Douglas you can catch those golden rays:
Oval Beach — The Queen of Beaches
When it comes to beaches, Oval Beach reigns supreme. This stunner has snagged awards like Condé Nast Traveler’s Top 25 Beaches in the World (yes, world), Tripadvisor’s Traveler’s Choice Awards for Best of the Best Beaches, and a ranking among Lonely Planet’s 23 Best Beaches in the USA. Think soft white sand, waves that sparkle like a disco ball, and views that make you think you’re on the ocean. Parking costs a little coin ($15/day), but you can totally keep it low budget by hopping on the Interurban bus for a buck. Pro tip: it’s free after Labor Day, so extend that summer glow.

Saugatuck Dunes State Park — Walk On The Wild Side
If you’re ready to get off the beaten path and get in a little workout before laying out, this is your go-to spot. With 2.5 miles of secluded beach backed by towering 200-foot dunes and peaceful wooded trails that feel beautifully untamed, you’ll swear you’ve stumbled into the wilds of the lakeshore. It’s the kind of place that practically begs for an Instagram moment, no filter required. There’s plenty of parking, but bring cash—a $9 day-use fee or state park permit gets you in.
Douglas Beach — Cue The Sunset
When it’s time to slow down, cozy up with someone cute, and watch the sun slip below the horizon, Douglas Beach is the laid-back sandy retreat you need. Quiet and secluded, this is the local crowd’s hidden gem, where the trees frame the shoreline, and the sunsets hit just right. Beach access is free, but parking’s limited, so come early to claim your spot.

Laketown Beach
Laketown Beach — Feel The Burn
If you’re down to work for your tan, Laketown Beach’s 350 stairs will give you that calorie burn with a killer view. Off the beaten path, peaceful, and totally worth the steps, this beach is for those who want to feel like they’ve earned their spot in the sun. Consider it your unofficial leg day—because the only thing tougher than leaving this view is the climb back up. Parking is free but limited to about 20 spots, so arrive early and save your strength for the stairs.
West Side County Park — Picnic Perfection
Need a chill spot to spread out a blanket and enjoy a low-key afternoon? This beach has you covered with picnic tables, pavilions, and plenty of space to relax. It’s got a family-friendly vibe, so while the playground and boardwalk areas might be more for the stroller crowd, the picnic areas and easy beach access make it a great spot to unpack some snacks, sun yourself, and recharge. And the best part? There’s no fee to get in, and there’s plenty of parking.
Pier Cove Beach — Get Your Rocks Off
Throwback alert! Named for the old shipping piers that once ruled these waters and supported the local logging and fruit industries, Pier Cove Beach is the perfect spot for skipping stones and rockhounding. Here, it’s less about laying out and more about daydreaming and filling your pockets with smooth stone treasures and fossils. Parking’s super limited (like 10 spots limited), so get here early and claim your spot.
